Dr. Fate #3 - Sept. 1987

sg
"Strangers" by J.M. De Matteis, Keith Giffen, and Dave Hunt.

With a story title like that, you'd have to figure The Phantom Stranger is going to play a large role in this story, right? Right!

Dr. Fate gets taken over by one of the Lords of Chaos, and soon after we see members of the then-Justice League meeting up. They each think one of the others has called the meeting, but its the work of someone else:
sg
The Stranger explains what has happened to Fate, and the JLA heads out to find him.

They soon do, but are not prepared for the savagery with which their former friend attacks them. After seemingly blowing Batman and Guy Gardner to smithereens, the Stranger argues that he now has to take on Fate directly:
sg
...Mr. Miracle doesn't buy the Stranger's oh-so-mysterious way of operating, but the Martian Manhunter assures him that the Stranger is probably right.

The Stranger then takes on Fate directly, but it doesn't go as planned:

sg
...yuck!

Of course, neither the Stranger, Batman, or Guy Gardner are really dead. *Whew!*

I'm not at all a fan of the Kupperberg miniseries that follows directly from the Stranger's apparent death here-- but I love this appearance, both visually and character-wise
